FAQs
Availability and access
Do I need to be on a specific plan to create a guarded rollout?
All LaunchDarkly accounts include a limited trial of guarded rollouts; however, full access to guarded rollouts is available to customers on the Enterprise plan with the Guardian add-on. To learn more, read Pricing.
Is this feature available for Federal customers?
Yes, it is. Read Guarded rollouts to learn how to get started.
Is there an Academy class to learn more about getting started?
Yes. You can take the Introduction to guarded releases learning path on LaunchDarkly Academy to help get started with guarded releases.
Setup and configuration
What's the best way to ensure that the guarded rollout is set up correctly?
You can use health checks. Health checks validate that your system is sending the appropriate signals for a guarded rollout and help detect configuration issues throughout the rollout. To learn more, read Health checks for releases.
Can you change the percentages of a guarded rollout during the rollout period?
No, you cannot adjust the rollout percentages while a guarded rollout is in progress.
However, when creating a guarded rollout, you can either:
- Use the default duration, where LaunchDarkly automatically increases the percentage of contexts receiving the new variation.
- Set a custom schedule, which lets you define how the rollout percentage changes at different points throughout the rollout.
Regardless of which option you choose, no individual rollout step can exceed 50% of traffic. To learn more, read Create a guarded rollout on a rule.
Can a guarded rollout be created if there's an active experiment running?
No. If a flag already has an active experiment, you'll need to stop that experiment before creating a guarded rollout for the flag.
Is it possible to pause a guarded rollout?
No. If a regression is detected during a guarded rollout, the default behavior is to roll back the rollout rather than pause it. To learn more, read Regression detection.
Metrics
How can you input metrics to LaunchDarkly and use them for a guarded rollout?
You can connect metrics to LaunchDarkly using any of the following methods:
- Use one of our metrics integrations.
- Call the metric import API.
- Use a LaunchDarkly SDK to send custom events, and connect them to metrics.
- Enable OpenTelemetry in a LaunchDarkly SDK and send the OpenTelemetry traces to LaunchDarkly to autogenerate metrics.
To learn more, read Metrics and guarded rollouts.
Can guarded rollouts use Snowflake metrics?
No, you cannot use metrics that receive events from Snowflake with a guarded rollout. This is because warehouse native metrics are not supported with guarded rollouts.
